On Sunday, May 20, 2007, an estimated 2,500 motorcyclists will join Dee Snider (radio personality and lead singer of Twisted Sister) and the March of Dimes in the fight against premature birth at Dee Snider’s 5th Annual Bikers for Babies Ride. Registration will begin at 9:00am at REXCORP PLAZA (formerly EAB Plaza) on Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale and the bikers will hit the open road at 11:00am. The route is as follows: Meadowbrook Parkway South to Ocean Parkway East; Ocean Parkway East to Robert Moses Causeway North; Robert Moses Causeway North to Sunrise Highway East; Sunrise Highway East to North Ocean Avenue. The ride will culminate at the Town of Brookhaven’s Town Hall located at One Independence Hill in Farmingville.
Premature birth is a tremendous problem in the United States, affecting nearly a half-a-million babies and their families each year. Over the past two decades, the rate of premature birth has risen a staggering 29% with nearly 50% of all premature births having no known cause. It is the leading cause of death for babies during their crucial first month of life and a major cause of lifelong disabilities, including cerebral palsy, mental retardation, blindness and chronic lung disease.
Together with Dee Snider, the March of Dimes hopes to raise money to pursue its mission of improving the health of babies, preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The March of Dimes mission is accomplished through programs of community services, advocacy, education and research.
Grand Marshal and celebrity chair, Dee Snider says, “One of the great things about being a biker is that we are part of a community and this is our chance to do something good. The March of Dimes strikes a chord with me. As the father of four, two of my children were born premature, and now, with your involvement and my big mouth, we will do something great!”
The ride is sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association and all motorcycle enthusiasts are welcome. A small registration fee of $25.00 is required and riders are treated to lunch, entertainment, including the sounds and songs of Dee’s son Jesse’s band
Baptized X Fire, and a host of vendors at the finish (Town of Brookhaven’s Town Hall in Farmingville). Interested riders may register by contacting the March of Dimes - Long Island Division at 516.496.8198 or via email at
